Aledade Announces Addition of ACO Pioneer Mark McClellan to Board of Directors

November 25, 2020

Former HIMSS Board Chair Paul Kleeberg also joins as Medical Director
December 15, 2015 (Bethesda, Md.) — Today, Aledade, Inc. announced that Mark McClellan MD, PhD – one of the nation’s foremost health care experts and an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) pioneer – will be joining its Board of Directors.

Dr. McClellan, a renowned expert on health care payment reform, is the lead co-author of an influential paper, “A National Strategy to Put Accountable Care Into Practice” that laid out a blueprint for implementing ACOs. Dr. McClellan was just appointed to be the inaugural director of the Duke University-Robert J. Margolis, MD, Center for Health Policy. He has been a Senior Fellow and Director of the Health Care Innovation and Value Initiatives at the Brookings Institution, where he has written and spoken about the importance of accountable care reforms in improving health care quality while driving down costs. During the George W. Bush Administration, Dr. McClellan served as the Administrator at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), as well as the Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In addition, Dr. Paul Kleeberg joins Aledade as a Medical Director. He is a family physician, as well as an expert on EHR optimization, clinical decision support, and quality improvement. He has served on several health care boards during his career and has more than 25 years experience in the health care IT field; most recently helping to implement health IT in rural and underserved settings. As the Chair of HIMSS, Dr. Kleeberg led the largest national health care IT nonprofit providing professional development to more than 61,000 individual members, 640 corporate members, and over 450 nonprofits; as well as help shape public policy for the growing health care IT sector.

“Mark McClellan is one of the founding fathers of Accountable Care Organizations. Few know more about what it takes for ACOs to be successful, and we are thrilled to have Mark join our board,” said Farzad Mostashari, Co-Founder and CEO of Aledade. “With Paul Kleeberg joining as Medical Director, we are bolstering the team that will support the hundreds of new physicians we have added to our ACOs this year.”

As a member of the Board of Directors, Dr. McClellan will help guide the company’s mission and provide strategic advice on the company’s growth.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with Farzad before, and I’ve seen how his deep and longstanding commitment to the success of independent primary care practices has translated into the development of the types of data analytics, tools, and other supports they need to thrive in a value-based health care system,” said Dr. McClellan. “I’m pleased to have this opportunity to apply the lessons we’ve both learned in our careers to help make independent practices even more successful.”

In his role as Medical Director, Dr. Kleeberg will provide clinical guidance to Aledade ACO physicians and their staff and help them transform their practices to succeed in value-based care arrangements. Dr. Kleeberg also will guide key quality and technology initiatives and utilize his expertise in implementing patient portal, ambulatory, and hospital EHR systems, to benefit Aledade’s independent primary care practices.

“I am very excited to be at Aledade. As a family physician with both small independent practice and large network experience, I understand the challenges physicians face trying to provide coordinated quality care in a broken fee-for-service model,” said Dr. Kleeberg. “I am eager to use my background in patient care, EHR optimization and quality improvement to help our practices thrive in this new pay-for-value environment.”

Aledade’s mission is to empower doctors on the front lines of medicine with cutting edge technology to help them deliver high-quality care, while bringing down health care costs. Aledade partners with independent primary care practices to make it easy, profitable, and low-risk for physicians to succeed in the value-based health care economy. Since its founding in June 2014, the company has partnered with more than 110 practices across 11 states, and covers approximately 100,000 Medicare beneficiaries.

Over the past year, Aledade ACO practices have increased preventative care visits by 400 percent and vaccination rates by 250 percent. All Aledade practices offer same or next day appointments for patients with urgent needs, and 95 percent of Aledade physician partners provide 24 hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week patient access to an on-call doctor. All new and existing ACOs manage these cornerstones of care through Aledade’s proprietary, cloud-based technology and analytics platform.
