The Medicare Shared Savings Program: A Solid Foundation for Population Health Innovation

Over the last decade, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center has launched 54 payment and service delivery models. At the same time, the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) has grown to cover nearly 11 million Medicare beneficiaries. 

In an article published today in Health Affairs, Senior Vice President, Policy & Economics, Travis Broome and Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Policy Officer Sean Cavanaugh joined several other accountable care organization experts to discuss why the MSSP should serve as a “chassis” for future innovation rather than building new population health models from the ground up: “[…] this approach would mark a fundamental shift whereby CMS acknowledged that the MSSP infrastructure is the starting point for many providers, not a competitor to new Innovation Center models.”
